For the author of the Hornblower series this was a relatively poor showing. Especially when compared to The Good Shepherd, which was excellent and full of detail. It was a lot shorter than I expected with hardly any character development or technical information. It was rather like a brief summary of events and it was vastly inferior to the film adaptation, which adds dialogue, character development, and suspense. I still enjoyed it and read it very quickly, but I was left feeling underwhelmed. It also had far too many typos, clearly the result of a rushed transcription job.
