- Political Survival.
- Business as usual: continued economic growth / making sure the quarterly GDP figures increase (with special focus on demographics and immigration to achieve this), appeasing lobbyists, maintaining corporate profits, etc.
- Keeping house prices elevated: homeowners represent a significant amount of voters, plus higher housing prices boost GDP figures.
- Combating inflation: voters complain when prices raise too quickly.
- Security against internal and external threats; domestic and foreign terrorism; policing, military.
- Healthcare system: voting population cares a lot about this, plus nurses and doctors are powerful unions.
- Environment and climate change.
- Education. Voters currently care more about the environment, inflation, and healthcare.
- Indigenous affairs (for Canada) and/or attitudes to immigration and immigrants.
- Infrastructure, such as transport network improvements, new houses and apartment buildings.
- Cultural wellbeing.
Sadly absent are making sure people are properly fed and meaningfully employed, two things I think government should prioritize.
